While fall is happening in earnest in other parts of this fine country (and ending in places -edemtbs), ours is just beginning. In hopes of finding some aspens in the midst of their glory, we headed to Flagstaff.
Past vacations have takens us to a land called Colorado, usually around the 1st of October. We have been fortunate in our timing and have marveled at the color the aspens.
I hadn't realized just how much the aspens had captivated me. The drive on I-70 into Summit County usually provided the first taste of the slopes covered in golden aspens. A quick stop at Officer's Gulch, just standing in awe of the size of the mountains and the colors.
This year our vacation happened over 4th of July, so, no fall colors. We had other adventures, which were thoroughly enjoyed and blogged previously. So, we made an attempt to view some of that wonderment. And, pretty much my family obligded. The 4runner was well stocked for the trip.
and the hound was ready as well
One of the first orders of business was a stop at Little Thai Kitchen. Lunch time had snuck up on us and the natives were restless. Ordered take out and enjoyed a little panang curry and cashew chicken. While walking around Heritage Square, we noticed a display set up with some people gathering. A local art gallery had a cyanotype exhibition set up and was inviting people to try their hand at the process. M had a go of it.
After a stop at Late for the Train for some hot chocolates, cookies and a latte, we went on a quest to find a dog park. Ended up going to Thorpe, which did have a park. We all had a good time, especially Addi, meeting all kinds of new friends.
After the dogpark, we headed up to Snowbowl to check out the fall progression. Showed up, looked at the lift, M wanted to take a ride. It was about 4:25. Lift closes at 4:30. No time to run back to the truck to get the extra jacket. Oh well, that's why we have a shiver reflex, right?
It was a fun, albeit cold, ride up the lift. 11,500 at the top of the lift. Chilly and some snow on the ground. We get to walk around and look out over the surrounding area, quite the view. It was a good day.
"Come," said the Wind to the Leaves one day.
"Come over the meadow and we will play.
Put on your dresses of red and gold.
For summer is gone and the days grow cold."
Indeed.
