Pretty much the name says it. A natural museum, outdoors. Called friends, packed lunches, loaded up kids, headed north. That's pretty much “the what” of it. We set off knowing the forecast of thunderstorms and a high in the 70's. Well, if you're underground, the rain shouldn't matter, was our thought.
This day started with coffee, a drive, and a picnic. The forecast for the rain was spot on, and as you can see here, there is some concern with the thunder. But, I always tell them, "if you hear the thunder, you are doing just fine." We finish eating and are rushed slightly by the raindrops, back to the vehicles.
Our drive resumes, after the rumbles in the tummy are satiated. And finally, we get to the site, headlamps are handed out.
Not quite the entrance that I was expecting. Just kinda pops out of the ground. So, into the maw.
Karis, not quite sure that we should continue, but we all decide that this is what we came for – to explore.
And, what do explorers need? Snacks!
The tunnels were bigger than I expected, even though the sign had said up to 30 feet high. Some of the time was scrambling over rocks, and others, the floor was fairly smooth.
Our trip under the earth took about an hour and a half. As we scrambled back up the slope to the entrance, we were greeted by Shawna and Henry, who was happy to see his people.
We played for awhile in the forest, not wanting our day to end. It was cool and pine scented. Phoenix was not. In the interest of fun, we decided to have a super hero pose –
And so, fun was had.
