This year we made the trek to Nebraska. Planned a night in GJ, make it in 2 longish days. The other piece of fun for this trip was the winter storm warning for Vail Pass et. al. Eh, we'll head that way anyway, an extra night in a hotel with lots of snow didn't sound bad in my head.
Sunday dawns and out we head. Early with the family and Macy's coffee house waiting in Flag. The long road across northern AZ and southern UT, is always an adventure. We travel through Monument Valley, a big eyeful for me. Goosenecks State Park, Canyonlands, Monument Valley, Comb Ridge, they all have a siren call.
This years travel had us heading into a winter storm warning for Summit County. We briefly thought about a southern route, but decided that getting stuck in a hotel in Colorado due to snow wouldn't be a bad thing. Heading toward Vail Pass, we start seeing signs requiring all commercial vehicles to don chains. Indeed.
The snowy road over the passes made for a longer trip. Speeds were slow, roads were slick, but the audio cd kept us going. Getting late, we pulled into a truck stop near Hershey, Nebraska, and saw someone's handiwork, Redbox Firewood. Pretty clever.
Once at our destination, Christmas commenced, eating happened and fun ensued. One afternoon saw the Grandpa showing the girls how to shoot. That was a plan of mine all along, and it didn't take much convincing for the girls. The Mennonite Mom, however, well, that was a little more but not much.
Our next day dawned cold and crisp. One of the fun things I remember about the cold is walking on the frozen creek. We set off, all bundled and coverall'd down the frozen tributary. An axe to play with (that sounds odd) shuffleing and snow angels or banshee's in this case make the trek fun.
Sunday came with fog and continued cold. The fog made for some beautiful trees. Enough so that I went out after church to do some photo work. Wind and temps in the teens make hands wrapped around the lens cold in a hurry.
With the holidays done, it was time to continue our journey. An overnight in Hutchinson, KS with family led to the trip back to the sunny place. It seems another storm had it's sights set on our road.
Arizona flora doesn't succumb to winter weather very well. Defiant until buried.
